What is IIT JAM Economics?
The Indian Institute of Technology conducts a joint admission test for MSc in Economics.
Eligibility: Some Eligibility criteria for candidates to write this exam are as follows.
- Candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree, previously it was based on CGPA cutoff but now passing is enough.
- Candidates appearing for the graduation exam in 2023 are also eligible to apply.
Provided they submit proof of graduation by September 2023.
- There is no age limit for this exam..
Exam pattern: The paper is divided into 3 sections- A, B, and C.
Section A- 10 Mcqs of 1 mark each and 20 Mcqs of 2 marks each
With ⅓ of negative marking.
Section B- 10 MSQs(multiple selection questions) of 2 marks each with no negative marking.
Section C- 10 NAT(numerical answer type) questions of 1 mark each
10 NAT questions of 2 marks each with no negative marking.

- general equilibrium and welfare, market structure,
- Game theory, public goods,
- market failure,
- national income,
- Behavioral and technological functions,
- business cycles, and economic models.
How to apply for this exam?
You can apply for IIT JAM Economics by visiting the website of IIT Guwahati, clicking on the JAM Online application processing system 2023 candidate portal, filling in the basic details, and getting registered.
You will get an OTP to log in and fill out the application form, fill in the required information and make payment. Save the application form for future reference.
You get selected based on the cutoff set by the institute if your score lies in their cutoff list you get eligible for a personal interview round.
Candidates who meet a percentile-based cut-off will be invited to appear for a written examination to be conducted by the Department. Further details about the written examination are presented here.
The second-round test may be conducted in May or June. The test will be of MCQ type and will have three sections: (a) Mathematics and Statistics (50% weightage), (b) Verbal skills and logical reasoning (30% weightage), and (c) Introductory Economics (20% weightage). The requirement of economics knowledge in part (c) is set at the standard XII level
What is GATE Economics?
The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is a computer-based test conducted jointly by seven IITs namely Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorkee, and Kanpur.
- You need a bachelor’s degree in economics, to apply for economics.
- Candidates currently in the final year of graduation can also apply for it.
- No age limit
- There is no specific passing percentage set, just passing is enough.
The exam consists of 55+10 general aptitude questions, GA has 10 questions + 15 reading comprehension questions and economics will have 40 questions.
All the questions are compulsory to attempt.
In total there are 65 MCQs in which GATE economics has 40 questions of 60 marks.

- C1 2- Macroeconomics,
- C1 3- Statistics,
- C1 4- International Economics,
- C1 5- Public economics,
- C1 6-Development Economics,
- C1 7- Indian Economy.
How to apply for it?
Step 1- GATE Registration
Step 2 – Fill out the Application form
Step 3 – upload the necessary documents
Step 4- Make payment for the GATE application.
Step 5- Complete the declaration and submit it.
After giving the exam, You qualify for it if your score satisfies the cutoff.
You get admission into IIT Kanpur through GATE Economics/ IIT Jam Economics scores.
Whereas in IIT Delhi and Roorkee, you get entry through IIT JAM economics score, and at IIT Madras you get admitted through GATE Economics score.
